In the final game of the first half of the season the M2s headed on the longest trip of the season down to play the in form Fidra. It was a particularly sluggish start (was it (i) the long drive (ii) the dysfunctional team set up (iii) overconfidence (iv) just one of those days) and Fidra capitalised on this with a well struck shot in the D to take the lead. Things didn’t really pick up for the M2 after this until just before the end of the quarter. Some space was found in midfield and Liam made an excellent run into D to deflect in the pass into the goal (via a defenders knee).
The hope was this would get things going but the second quarter was still not going to plan and Fidra again took the lead with a powerful drag flick from a penalty corner. At half time Cammy/Daz masterminded a tactical switch and along with everyone picking up the intensity and realising nothing is given to you in this league the M2s started to be far more on the front foot and dominating the play. This was rewarded with the equaliser after a great lead and pass by Stuart M found Michael B in the D, a tame pass/shot followed but Liam reacted to nudge the ball over the goalie.
The rest of the half M2s pressed for the winner. Some mazy runs through half the opposition by Cammy looked set to set up the goal but nothing quite got finished off. However in the move of the game Cammy found Liam who first timed it to stuart in the D. Stuart picked out the pass across the goal to the diving Kev S to finish.
Credit to everyone for turning around the game which looked to be slipping away at times. To have won 6 of the first 9 games is a huge improvement and down to a real shift in the attitude and quality of the whole team.
A few special mentions (although EVERYONE has played their part in so many ways ) goes to
- Paul G – slotted into the team so well making a string of match winning saves and keeping the defence on their toes the whole 70 minutes
- David W - for being a rock in every game he plays
- Craig B -for being the warrior of the team, playing consistently well week in week out, winning multiple MOMs
- Colin B- for stepping up into twos so well, putting so much effort in and improving every week
- Michael C – for scoring 3 vital winners already in the season and being a menace to opposition defenders
- Kev S- for adding some proper star quality into the team
Enjoy the break, keep the fitness up and clear away any niggles so we can have a great second half of the season
