A rare away day took a strong 3s team to Tranent to face Fidra.
Falkirk got of to a strong start with some solid possession and passing across the back. However this Fidra team were fast, skilful and quickly broke through Falkirk’s midfield to create some strong chances. Thankfully not converting many of them until the second quarter.
Fidra took the lead from a second bite at a short corner falkirk failed to clear allowing the ball to come back in from a crash ball from the right. The story of Falkirk’s first half was one of frustration and poor positioning. With another breakdown in possession in the middle allowing Fidra to capitalise and double their lead.
Some stern words were said (by many) at half time however individual anger seemed to spur a new lease of life into Falkirk. The shape was better, the shouts were constructive and within minutes Falkirk carved Fidra open with some brilliant interplay between Brodie and Adam Gardner only for the chance to go begging.
The faster passing play, better press and some silky skills from Colin B spinning on the right wing to the shouts of “what a spin Colin!” Resulted in some short corner opportunities and goal scoring opportunities. Opportunities usually capitalised on by our forwards who have been in great form in recent weeks. Outcomes were earned and finally Falkirk earned some penalty corners.
Step up Chris Brodie who made the most of a slick injection from Arthur to drive the ball past the defence and in off the backboard. 2-1 the comeback was on.
Again neat interplay seen Falkirk have some glorious chances. Adam rounding the keeper and taking a shot that went narrowly wide. The press continued and the errors from the Fidra team were evident, a short corner was awarded again.
Brodie then stepped up to drag flick a screamer into the roof of the net. 2-2 but that’s not what we came here for.
Next up Cyb was gifted a glorious 1 on 1 chance after Brodie robbed the defence, passed a player or two then slotted Cyb through on the keeper. Hot of a hat trick last week it was there for the taking. However Cybs effort narrowly passed the post to the chants of “how” from our subs. Agonising.
Fidra came back into the game after this heaping pressure on the defence, some tired legs struggled to keep Fidra out of our 25. However Arthur and Scott B were solid all day, picking up scraps hassling players and giving Fidra no time to find that final pass.
2 mins to go. Falkirk are deep in their half, there’s tired legs and some occasional crash ball. However one such ball up the wing found Brodie who turned and skipped past a defender to then take on an out rushing goalkeeper. The keeper dived to the ground as Brodie rounded the ball past him. Suddenly Brodie hits the deck (Q slow motion music and theatrical diving) the umpire gives a PF in the final minute.
Scott Ferguson harshly took the PF duty from Brodie. Who was on a hat trick and fully deserved a third. So falkirk had the PF to win the match. Scott stepped up picked his spot and slotted home for his second PF conversion of the season. Going low to the keepers right but certainly not clinical and not one to remember as it barely got across the line. 3-2 to Falkirk Scott F was very thankful for some poor keeper positioning. A huge sigh of relief as we held on to secure the win.
A PF that really summed up Falkirk’s day, getting the result but certainly not firing on all cylinders. However this extends our unbeaten run in the league and it certainly was a comeback worthy of a title contending team.
Chris Brodie gets Man of the match vote from the team after a fantastic brace, PF win and overall performance full of work and effort.
